Come una fiaba (Like in a Fairy Tale)- London, UK, 1880: shut up in his library, a rich English painter reads the correspondence that his young wife Rosina, an Italian girl issued from a peasant family, has been exchanging for years with her sister and the Parish priest of her home village, Olevano Romano.

Il giorno delle valigie (The Day of the Suitcases) – Rome, Italy, 20th century, second half of the Seventies. Lia, a woman in her fifties who is about to leave her unfaithful husband, on the way to the railway station drops at Rita’s, her sister. The episode is told by Rita to her daughter years after its occurrence.

Diva (Movie Star) – Paris, France, 20th century, late Seventies. Nineteen-year-old Gladys recalls, alone at first, then with a friend of hers, her life as she has been spending it in the past five years at La Réunion Island, France and in L.A., California. Through her reflections she tries to find her own path in response to the new awareness her experiences lightened up in her mind while in Los Angeles a few months earlier.

Through the observation of the stories and behaviours of three women each one exemplifying her own generation (1850s, 1920s, 1960s), Tre donne in un cammeo deals with the gradual self-awareness the Occidental woman has experienced through one century in quite different social and historical conditions, as well as with her resulting increasing possibility to operate free autonomous choices.

Each of the three main characters embodies one of the Graces of Greek mythology, i.e. Euphrosyne, Thalia and Aglaea and portrays the specific characteristic of her mythological “sister”. In this respect Tre donne in un cammeo is a tribute to the mythical method in literature and employs the symbol as the unifying element of the work structure.
